Hospitalidad / Hospitality

The first stage of this ambitious voyage down the American Continent is coming to an end and this calls for a little evaluation.

I have arrived today at Brownsville, Texas. It’s a small town separated from Mexico by the Río Bravo and a fence built by the handicapped mentality of the very peculiar Bush administration. I’ll explore the town tomorrow and will provide Roro with the much desired and long-awaited engine protective guards; Footpegs too, which will allow me to finally stretch my legs while riding. There is only one man in the entire world that makes these protective guards for the Vulcan 500, which is the make of my Roro. The original part by Kawasaki is some piece of crap sticking out of a tube and quite expensive, so it doesn’t count, while Mr. Vicente custom-makes them to order. This fine man lives and works in the town of Brownsville, where I arrived without having to detour from the most reasonable route you can take from New York to Mexico. What’s even more amazing is that his house/workshop is about seven minutes away from the Motel I checked in without even planning it. Coincidence? Maybe. Stars or divinities working in my favor? Could be too. We can all believe whatever we can and want.

Anyway, I was evaluating. After two weeks traveling across this gigantic country, from the frosty Appalachian Mountains to the oppressive heat of the Texan flatlands, I come to the conclusion that either I am one really lucky guy or the American people are victims of an undeserved reputation. The truth is that everyone I have come across in this trip has been nothing but kind and helpful, rooting me on and supporting me in this dream. They have taken me into their houses, quenched my thirst, fed me and even blessed me (which regardless of how I feel about it, it sure can’t harm me). The hospitality that I have received from the hands of strangers overwhelms me. I wasn’t planning on writing about this so early on since I’m sure I’ll have more on the subject as I continue meeting people further South, but I felt I needed to devote a few lines to thank all the people who have helped me so far and acknowledge their trust and generosity without expecting anything in return.

For example, I landed on the ‘Staybridge Suites’ in Brownsville today and Jesse, its Manager, not only provided me with valuable information on how things worked on both sides of the Border, but he also gave me a substantial discount on the room. This is a godsend considering my savings will only shrink as money keeps going out and nothing comes in for weeks on end. This is just one of the many tokens of solidarity that I have received and serve as a fuel injection to my heart: I am accumulating an emotional debt bigger than the national debt of the US and Spain combined.

This makes me think that the traveler inspires people because it embodies freedom, adventure or passion for the unknown. The traveler is admired and respected and there’s something inside everyone that identifies with him/her. It sparks an instinctive and honest desire for its wellbeing, for him to reach his destination safe and sound, to achieve the goal he set for himself. Maybe the traveler manages to pump one more drop out of the well of romanticism, surprising even those who believed theirs was completely dry.

It may be all this or just that I’m incredibly lucky. Either way, I am grateful for the hospitality of this land, which has made me forget about nationalities or political differences and helped me reconcile with the human race, of which I am sadly not always proud to be a part of.

Hoy llegué a Brownsville, Texas.
