The Shortest distance between two points is a straight line

This may be the reason why it can take some time to appreciate curves. When I was a kid and started to use my brain for something other than trying to get my parents to give me things by way of emotional blackmail, I realized that I was immersed in a world of straight lines. My perception was obviously limited by my innocence and poor use of reason, but I came to believe that this was the only way things could be. The straight line was present everywhere. Getting to school on time every morning meant taking no detours, and following a rectilinear route would get us there faster. Once in school, there were the rigid rules of Mathematics, Spanish class with the analysis of linear narratives and language construction. At Recess we would play tag and run in straight lines to the ‘safe house’. Standing in line to get our Lunch, running 100 feet in Gym class, being straight with your teachers and looking at your parents straight in the eye. You get the idea.

It wasn’t until my teenage years that I started to esteem, and desire, a very specific kind of curve: that of the hips following the waist. Since my hormones were of the Heterosexual kind I had no other choice than to understand that a straight line is not always the most attractive. Also, it was the 90’s and the fashion models were pretty well endowed in their healthy and elliptical structures, unlike the sad display of walking corpses we see in the runways today. Playboy bunnies almost made me want to seek shelter in between their breasts and fall asleep like a baby, rather than engaging in one of my festive-erotic sessions. It was my first discovery of the beauty surrounding the curve.

Time went by and other curves got my attention: the curve of the horizon when seen from a beach, the curve a trickle of water makes when you approach it with a finger charged with static energy. The curves a 35mm film makes as it bends inside the camera and afterwards the projector. The bloody curvature in the space-time continuum that made Marty McFly go through hell. My world was opening up and so where my dreams. It was probably around this time that my conventional view of life gave way to a more romantic approach, something that would give me all sorts of trouble in the years to come, specially when dealing with Advanced Algebra.

There was one curve though, that I feared and always hated. It got me sick and made me throw up: the curves on the road, which I suffered as a passenger in my parent’s car. Actually, I still get sick when riding in cars, even when I’m driving myself.

There’s a simple explanation to why so many people get sick in cars, it has to do with Centrifugal force (or is it Centripetal?, I knew I should have taken Physics class more seriously). This force pushes you to the furthest side of every curve, making you sway endlessly inside that car and turning your entrails into the unwilling riders of some nasty roller coaster. You might as well be inside some giant baby’s rattle, and that can’t be healthy. This explains why that murder happened aboard the Orient Express or why Celine hooked up with the American in the tilting train. Neither of these stories could have happened while riding an automobile, but a train is the right setting because curves are endured better aboard a train. They’re smoother and you can barely feel them.

One day, about three years ago, I discovered how fascinating curves could be on the road. My dear Roro taught me that when you ride a motorbike you laugh in Centrifugal force’s face – or Centripetal’s. In a motorcycle you become one with the curve because the relative inclination compensates the push to the far side of the curve. The narrower the curve, the more you lean. You make use of the “counter steering” technique in which you steer briefly in the opposite direction of the curve causing the bike to lean just the right angle, allowing you to take those curves while preventing your liver from mingling with its fellow organs in your digestive cavity.

If you’re prudent, a curvy road with low traffic can be Paradise. It feels as if someone is rocking you softly. You have to be cautious, because this peace and emotional calmness can make you sleepy and that’s not a good thing until you’re ready to park and check in at the Motel.

I guess my enjoyment of the curves is what’s slowing me down seeing that after a week I am nowhere close to the border with Mexico. But if the shortest distance between two points is indeed a straight line, it is also the most boring, and I’ll have plenty of time to get bored in front of the TV when I get back home.

Me ponía enfermo. Vomitaba.
