San Martín y su mula / Saint Martin and his mule

Just like Saint Martin had his mule, Don Quixote had Rocinante and Alberto and Ernesto had ´La Poderosa´, I have my Roro. I have decided to take a stroll with the only Female that puts up with me, this may be because instead of a heart she has a 500cc parallel motor and all the tenderness she needs is good lubrication and a change of tires every 6,000 miles.

Our little trip begins in this love-hated city where I reside, New York, with the uncertain destination of Ushuaia, Argentina. I’m not sure how many miles that is, and I’d rather not find out as I don’t want to back down. This crazy voyage has two main objectives: One, to make my dream of traveling the American continent from North to South come true. Two, to capture my experiences on the road in a kind of film, which I’m not sure if it will be documentary or fiction but certainly a mental wank which will feed my huge and now famous ego.

In the subject of objectives, the purpose of this blog is simply to inform of my whereabouts, and it will also serve as a kind of diary to express my thoughts as I move along this, as Ché would call it before changing his name, ‘Mayúscula (enormous) América’.  I must confess the whole blog concept makes me a little sick. I’m sure there’s quite a few talented cyberwriters among the hordes of people pounding the keyboards, but I can’t understand the need of hundreds of nobodies to communicate their every little thought, no matter how stupid it may be. I understand even less those who follow these unknown authors when there are so many Classics still to be read in the Library shelves. This is why this may be my first and last blog entry. I will try to write often though, since I know at least my Mother will read it and feel a little more relaxed because if in Cartesian theory Thought confirms my existence, in more practical terms my digital missives confirm I’m still alive.

Some Information:
Estimated date of Departure: October 5th
Estimated date of Arrival: January 15th
Route: Drive all the way down the Pan-American Highway, more or less.  Certain detours are expected.
Equipment: The condemned EO5 5D and a tripod. Few accessories.
Defense weapon: A pair of Leatherman pliers. The awesome machete I had bought to defend myself from wild boars and riffraff, turns out not to be legal to carry around the US. Guns are okay but no knives. Funny fact on American society.

I have one more week to get my Rocinanta ready –referred to as ‘Roro’ from now on–, take care of some paperwork and get that second shot against Hepatitis. As of now I am protected against Typhus, Yellow Fever, Tetanus and Diarrhea. I am however, unprotected against blood-thirsty Mexican drug traffickers or Caribbean women. But who wants to be completely safe, right? The adventure must entail some degree of risk, and improvisation.

For the moment Roro was just released from a weeklong stay at her Gym, where she endured an intensive health treatment by my friend and mechanic Saint Manuel. Smooth and strong, valves adjusted and new tires… she feels quite safe. The problem now is that the screws that secure the saddlebags have somehow fused together with the metal frame. This could be seen through a romantic lens: two elements becoming one, the definition of love as we’ve come to learn from all those sappy rom-coms from the 90’s. Truth is this is quite a drag since I must replace the saddlebags and install a baggage rack. After a couple of civilized attempts to remove them from their cozy little hole, I have taken the savage approach by way of saw and drill. Three hours later I’ve given up, I lack the proper tools for this task. Roro will return to the Hospital on Sunday to Manuel, whom I’m hoping will get rid of those pesky screws with a Family size drill.
More tomorrow.

Get rid of those damn screws, Don.

  2. While I am disturbed by your exclusion of us "Gringos" from your blog by writing in Spanish, and even more disturbed by your reference to protection against Caribbean women (yes, I saw your later retraction but still...), I will contribute my two cents as an "adopted" Catracha (Hondurena)!

Some expressions you will need for the carretera Panamericana...

Vaya pues! = vale, vale, vale!

"Fijate que..." = Expression used as one looks to the sky searching the heavens for some ill-conceived lies to get you out of trouble.

    Me vale...pija/verga! = I could give a fuck!

  3. I know, but I'm too lazy to translate it. And most of you gringos kinda speak Spanish anyway... For those who still have some difficulties understanding the royal language (like Ted) this is the perfect encouragement to learn!
I love "Fijate que..." and I will most definitely use it...
